The Secret to a Natural Looking Nose Job

Beverly Hills rhinoplasty, more commonly known as a “nose job,” is considered one of the most complex plastic surgeries, and the easiest to “botch.” Because your nose sits directly in the middle of your face, if your nose looks out of balance, whether because of nature or because of a poor nose job, you probably won’t feel confident about your appearance. While your nose may look simple, its structure is complex. Not only is it shaped by a variety of precise planes and curves, it’s also composed of different tissues that are easily scarred or damaged. Nicholas Lahar, MD, founder of Lahar Plastic Surgery in Beverly Hills, California, comprehensively analyzes the structure of your nose both externally and internally, in the style of the world-renowned Dallas Rhinoplasty Surgeons. After doing so, he custom-designs a surgical plan to improve your nose so that it looks natural and harmonious. Here he offers a few tips about how to ensure that your new nose looks beautiful, functions efficiently, and appears as natural as if you were born with it.

Small changes can bring big results

Even though you may think you need to drastically change the shape, breadth, or length of your nose, conservative rhinoplasty procedures often bring remarkable changes. A big key is making sure your rhinoplasty brings your nose into balance with your face.

Your unique anatomy also sometimes restricts your reshaping options. Your nose has important functions to perform, and aesthetic changes should not interfere with these. Consulting with Dr. Lahar establishes what’s right for your face and your physiology.

Self-care is essential

While choosing the best plastic surgeon is the first step to ensure an excellent outcome for your rhinoplasty, your responsibilities don’t end there. Dr. Lahar and our staff give you instructions on how to prepare for your surgery and what to do during your recovery period. You should follow the instructions precisely and feel free to call if you’re not sure or have forgotten what you’re supposed to do.

Before surgery

In the weeks leading up to your rhinoplasty, you should change or stop using certain medications, supplements, and herbs. For example, Dr. Lahar instructs you to avoid using blood thinners such as aspirin or ibuprofen two weeks before surgery.

If you smoke, you should discontinue using any tobacco product, including vaping, in the months prior to your surgery. Nicotine can adversely affect blood flow and the way your body responds to the surgery.

Your post-operative preparations actually begin pre-operatively: Before your rhinoplasty, get any post-op prescriptions filled so they’ll be ready as soon as you need them.  Arrange for a week or two off work so that you have adequate recovery time.

Make sure you enlist a team of family and friends ready to help you after your surgery. You’ll need a ride home after your procedure because you’ll be drowsy from anesthesia. You’ll also need assistance with your daily responsibilities, such as household tasks, as you recover.

Arrange your bed and other resting places so that you can recline with your head elevated to aid drainage of the affected areas. You don’t need to purchase anything special, though: just prop yourself up on pillows.

After surgery

Dr. Lahar may need to put silicone splints in your nose as after your procedure, to help guide your nasal bone and cartilage as they heal. These may remain in place for about a week.

If you wear glasses, tape them to your forehead so they don’t rest on your nose during the early stages of recovery. You should avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks or until our team gives you permission to go back to normal activities.

You also need to take baths rather than showers to avoid getting the incisions wet. Following postoperative instructions faithfully will help you get the natural results you desire.
