While Botox injections can do wonders for fine lines and wrinkles on the face, unfortunately, it’s not a permanent solution. Those who get Botox injections regularly know that they must get several treatments every year in order to keep their skin looking fresh, smooth, and youthful.
So, how long does Botox really last?
Below, we’ll outline the answer to this question and explore how often you should be getting injections in order to maintain your results.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Generally speaking, results from Botox injections will last for around three to four months. In some cases, results may last for up to six months, and in other (rarer) cases, results will only last for around two months.
Most individuals who have never had Botox before and are getting injections for the first time will notice that their results don’t last quite as long as individuals who have been getting Botox for a long time. Rest assured, however, that if it’s your first time getting Botox and your results haven’t lasted very long, you should see longer-lasting results on your second and all subsequent treatments.
With all of this said, everyone will have a different experience when it comes to their Botox results. Furthermore, the duration of how long your Botox results will last will also depend on the location where you are getting injections.
Let’s take Botox for the forehead, for example. How long does forehead Botox last? Patients often have this question.
Essentially, it’s different for every patient. However, most patients who get Botox for the forehead will see their results last for approximately four months. Any areas of the face that tend to move more frequently (for example, around the mouth) will not retain results from Botox for as long as areas of the face that tend to have less movement.
Why Is Botox Temporary?
Sometimes, patients aren’t even aware that they have to ask the question, “How long does Botox last?” because they assume this treatment is permanent. This can be a rude awakening when their results disappear after four to six months.
The reason Botox is temporary is in the way that it works.
Botox is a neurotoxin that blocks neurotransmitters and causes paralysis of the facial muscles. This, in turn, smooths the appearance of the skin because the muscles aren’t contracting. The trouble is that this neurotransmitter blocking effect eventually wears off when your body generates new neurotransmitters (which it does all the time).
Suggested Frequency of Botox
So, how often should you get Botox?
This will depend on several factors. First, it will depend on where you would like to get Botox on your face. As stated above, how long Botox lasts will partly depend on where on your face you are getting injections.
In addition, everyone reacts to Botox differently. Your age, skin quality, and other factors will play a role in dictating how long your Botox results last and how frequently you require treatment.
In the end, most patients end up getting Botox every four months or so. But again, you may want to get your injections more frequently or less frequently, depending on how long your results tend to last. Together with Dr. Lahar, you can decide upon the ideal frequency for your Botox injections.
Can I Get Botox Every 6 Months?
For various reasons, some patients may want to get Botox every six months. It’s a good way to save money, and it can be easier to remember that you need to get Botox only twice a year. Also, getting Botox isn’t always exactly the most enjoyable experience, especially for individuals who may fear needles.
If you prefer to get Botox every six months, this is, of course, up to you. Some patients will find that they are able to maintain their results throughout the year by just getting injections twice a year.
On the other hand, it’s possible that you may see some diminishment of your results near the end of six-month treatments. If this doesn’t bother you, there’s absolutely no problem with getting Botox every six months. If you don’t like this, you may want to consider more frequent treatments.
Does Botox Make You Look Older After It Wears Off?
Let’s say you need to stop Botox injections for a while because of a medical reason. Or, perhaps you’re unable to get your next round of Botox because you’ll be on vacation when you usually have your appointment.
Will stopping Botox make you look older?
Generally speaking, no. Why?
Because whenever you get Botox, you are essentially stopping your facial muscles from working as hard as they normally would if you didn’t have Botox. This actually delays the creation and perpetuation of fine lines and wrinkles. Essentially, it delays the aging process.
Therefore, it stands to reason that you will actually not look older after Botox wears off. However, you may want to continue getting injections when you are able so that you can keep signs of aging at bay for longer.
